GARLIC (Allium sativum)
Garlic is both healing and nutritious largely due to it’s volatile essential oil. It has many medicinal
properties e.g anti-septic, anti-bacterial, disinfectant, vermicide (a substance that is poisonous to worms),
stimulant and tonic (tones and invigorates), to name but a few. It’s volatile oil is mainly excreted through
the lungs, making it very useful in infections of the respiratory system, such as bronchitis, catarrh,
recurrent colds and flus.
Garlic also stimulates gastric juices and settles gas conditions in the stomach, while stimulating the
growth of ‘good bacteria’. It may be used as a preventative medicine against infections of the respiratory
and digestive tracts.
Garlic also has a vital role in our cholesterol levels. It has been shown to reduce Low density Lipoprotein
(LDL) also known as “bad” cholesterol, while increasing our High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) also known
as “good” cholesterol levels in the body.
It was used as an anti-septic for wounded soldiers during World War I. It kills both harmful bacteria and
viruses and has been used effectively to rid the body of round worms and pin worms.
